Nishant Kaushik (Aus) on Breaking the Code

The Melbourne Writers’ Symposium concluded yesterday, the 7th of October 2018, with a round of applause from a crowd of around eighty enthusiastic participants that followed a parting note seeking stronger engagement between writers and readers across the world. Novelists, screenwriters, publishers, editors, and social media enthusiasts comprised a long list of speakers who shared their experiences in the industry as well as some food for thought on certain notions that exist around how easy or difficult it is to get one’s foot through the door of this fraternity or even more importantly, to survive and thrive in an atmosphere fraught with fierce competition and constant change. As we wrapped up the event last evening, it dawned upon me that the more I think of myself as an established artist who has understood every trick of the trade, the likelier I am to run into bright people who will tell me, ‘Well you are just getting started, buddy.’ That the occurrence of this symposium nearly coincided with a decade of me being a published author only makes this realisation more surreal.
