On writing skills in 2nd language

“The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe” Gustave Flaubert

Writing is one of the best ways to communicate and to express your thoughts. Even if you don’t want to choose writing as your career, it is important to know how effectively you can influence and inspire people by the means of words. Nowadays as our societies become more and more multicultural, knowing more than one language and being able to convey your thoughts in several languages is not a luxury but a necessity. In order to reach your audience globally you need to enhance your writing skills in a language which is spoken worldwide, if not, you will be wiped out, no matter how talented you are. Definitely, aspiring writers and even entrepreneurs can expand their horizons through learning a 2nd language.

Finding your ‘voice’ in a language defines who you are and how stylishly and skillfully you are using that language. I vividly remember when I started learning my 2nd language by reading at least a book in English per week. English literature and theatre were so fascinating that regular reading and writing in my 2nd language became a habit. As soon as the process became a habit, my particular voice showed up. Writing is a kind of dancing with words, the more you practice, the better you get.

I couldn’t agree more with this adage “your pen can be mightier than the sword” of course, if we learn how to employ language masterfully. I strongly advise my fellow writers and friends to feel comfortable writing in more than one language. Even if it takes half of your life to improve your writing skills in another language, hang in there and work on it as it’s completely worth the effort.

This is a brilliant piece of writing for several reasons. First it is expressing quite complex ideas using a English as a second language writer and the second is how wonderfully well you write those ideas. I wish I was as fluent in my second language. The points you make are 100% right. Great stuff!!
